These are old photos (from July 2012) but I just thought they were too cute not to post now. These are baby Gray Mouse Lemurs (Microcebus murinus) that were born at the Duke Lemur Center as part of a special breeding program.
The second photo shows triplets (!!!) who arrived on June 5th, 2012 . Then there’s the photo of the much calmer, lone mouse lemur near the top. Those four were named Bluebell, Blackberry, Pipkin and Dogbane.
Gray mouse lemurs are not only one of the world’s cutest mammals, they’re also among the world’s smallest. They only weigh 1/8 of a lb as adults! Eeee!
At night this species keeps to itself, hunting alone using those huge eyes to see in even the darkest of conditions and using those big ears to hear things we can’t even fathom! But by day it wants a little socialization; they’ll curl up in a tree hole with around fifteen other tiny mouse lemurs to form a cuddle ball. That is not a technical term.
There are seventeen different species of mouse lemur, however they all look pretty much the same. The only way scientists can tell what species they are observing is through genetic testing. Interesting!
