This gorgeous jewel of a creature is the Violet-crowned Woodnymph (Thalurania colombica).
They’re fairly common in the areas they inhabit though oddly enough not
much is known about their courtship or mating behavior.
The birds in the photos shown here are all of males (since they are the prettiest). Females
lack the bright purple hues this bird gets its name from. Instead, they
are bright green above and duller green below, with a grey throat and
breast. Males weigh 4.5 g and only reach 10.2 cm in length. Sooo tiny!
Can you imagine how small their babies must be? I tried to find a photo
of them on the interwebz but no such luck.
If anyone has a photo of a Violet-crowned Woodnymph chick I’d LOVE to see it!
