An Oriental Darter

An Oriental Darter (Anhinga melanogaster) dries its wings in the sun in , India. Darter’s feathers soak through to aid in keeping a negative buoyancy. Unlike most other birds, they do not have hollow bones! Their bones are solid, which makes them heavier and less buoyant, and they are able to stay under water longer, and with less effort, to hunt fish.
